But they actually have and shipped my radio that I’ve been waiting almost 2 months for. It comes this saturday.
Woo! Now I gotta figure out where to put it...
Pretty excited to have this though, 50 watt dual band (2 meter/70cm) analog/digital radio with APRS (automatic data packets) and GPS. I wanted this radio specifically for that last feature as I can turn it on and have my family check in on my location online anytime, even places with zero cell coverage. Obviously, Im not going to leave it on all the time.
I already have an antenna on the roof that is...okay. I bought a little speaker and I already have a place picked out for my mic. To be honest I probably won’ t use it a ton since none of my travel party has their license but it is fun to have on road trips so I can chat with folks up and down the rockies.
As a bonus I got my company employee apprec iation gift yesterday, a blanket with some of the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . So that’ s nice.
My birthday present from my mom arrived several days early and...i already know what it is because she used my email as the shipping email. So excited to have a 2nd angle grinder! This one battery powered for mobile crap fixing .
no more swapping between cutting and grinding discs for this guy!

Let’s hope it doesn’t get shipped to Massachusetts.

“Hey so, I thought it would be a fun engagement activity to see who in the company can come up with a fun way to promote our new versablanket. Then we’ll take that idea and publish it” - Probable quote from Klymit CEO

Aye. I guess its a discontinued model and the one replacing it has pretty much all the same features but a nicer display for nearly twice the cost. I got a decent deal on it.

Knowing the market (they are based here in Utah) I’m guessing this turd came straight from the CEO’s desk right before leaning back in his chair with a satisfied sigh.

Link? At some point I need to add a ham to my GMRS and CB radios.

Like I said in another comment, this model is discontinued, so you may be able to find one out there, but don’t count on it.

Looks like Amazon has some of the last batch though. I paid about $100 less thr ough at Ham Radio Outlet. They may put some in their discontinued section.

Very cool. One of the car groups I run with everyone has little BauFang 8W radios and we use (I think) FRS channels to keep in touch on the road which I gather is questionable in the legality department but not as questionable as some of the things they do. I’ve found it to be reliable and handy.
The corvette club I was a part of a lot of th e old timers used CB’s to communicate but by the time I was in and understood the power of them no one really did it anymore. I’d love to have a longer range option to use with some of my road trip partners but everyone getting a license is unlikely at best sadly.

I currently have a bao feng 8 watt and its great. The legality of using the FRS/GMRS channels isn’t questionable...its very clearly illegal. That being said if you use the stock antenna and use the lowest power setting I have a hard time seeing the harm as its really just a technical issue at that point. i.e. RFS/GRMS was written so you couldn’t have removable antenna’s because they didn’t want consumers being able to use them to the detriment of other consumers , but if you have a HAM license its implied (and writt en in) that you take greater responsibility for your radio emissions and that you are capable of self monitoring. As long as you aren’t blasting out 50 watts with a high gain antenna on the channel...they aren’t likely to give a crap.
